“Staring at the Wall Part 4 of 5”

Vertigo's long-running John Constantine series hits its fourth chapter of "Staring at the Wall" with this March 2004 installment, written by Mike Carey with interior art by Marcelo Frusin. Tim Bradstreet's cover painting is genuinely arresting — a lone figure, face tilted upward and half-consumed by fire and swirling violet energy, rendered in brooding oranges and purples that feel equal parts hellish and hypnotic. With the five-part arc nearing its conclusion, this is a fine moment to be following one of comics' most morally complicated occult antiheroes.
