Paul Pope's Heavy Liquid rolls into its third chapter with a cover that's as stylish as anything Vertigo put out in 1999 — a striking young woman with wild curling hair, dark facial markings, and a heart tattoo gazes over her shoulder, dressed in layered punk-luxe textures of green, black, and purple fur. The lower band of the cover is designed like a passport or boarding stub stamped "SCRAMJET/BOARDING," giving the whole package a cool, near-future traveler's aesthetic that hints at worlds in motion. Pope handles every line himself here, and his fluid, fashion-forward draftsmanship makes this penultimate-stretch issue hard to put down before you've even opened it.
