In the distant past, Ktar Deathbringer travels from planet to planet to capture beings to sacrifice to the Deathbringers. Over time he grows weary of the killing and joins with captive Thanagarians to destroy the temple of the Deathbringers. He is killed during the rebellion by his former friend Idamm. A god-like being passes judgement on Ktar, and offers him a chance to redeem himself by being reborn across time and space as a hero to save lives.
