Hawkman #19
Murphy Anderson's cover for Hawkman #19 sets an urgent, dramatic tone: a snarling, muscular beast has Hawkman chained by the ankle and raises a massive fist to strike him, while Hawkgirl lies pinned beneath the creature in the lower corner — the cover copy warning that finding his lost wife may prove the last day of Hawkman's life. It's a wonderfully tense 1967 Silver Age image, with Anderson's crisp linework giving the monstrous antagonist real menace against a stark black background. "Parasite Planet Peril!" promises exactly the kind of high-stakes, otherworldly adventure that made Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson's run on this series so enjoyable.
