“The Day the Kid Gave Up!”

This May 1959 ten-cent Marvel western splits its cover — penciled by Jack Kirby and inked by Chris Rule — between two rousing frontier scenarios: on the left, Kid Colt, Outlaw stands surrounded by armed townspeople as bystanders crow "Imagine! Kid Colt captured in our town! We'll be famous!", teasing the story "The Day the Kid Gave Up!"; on the right, a wild-eyed gunman blazes away in the street as panicked crowds scatter, captioned "Wyatt Earp Turns Badman!" with onlookers shouting that Earp has "gone loco." Two fan-favorite western heroes, two dramatically different predicaments — all packed onto a single bold cover that captures everything that made frontier comics irresistible in 1959.
