“Earth's Other Green Lantern!”

In "Earth's Other Green Lantern!", Hal Jordan is shown a haunting alternate timeline where Guy Gardner, not he, became the Green Lantern of Sector 2814. In that world, Guy's heroic journey on the planet Ghera ends in tragedy, his life cut short by a yellow plague—but not before passing the power ring to Hal. The experience leaves Hal with a new respect for Guy, and their bond deepens as the Guardians' vision fades. Written by John Broome and Len Wein, with dynamic art by Gil Kane and Dick Giordano, and a striking cover by Gil Kane, this 1985 classic explores destiny, legacy, and the fragile line between heroism and fate.

The Guardians show Hal Jordan what would have happened if Guy Gardner had been chosen by Abin Sur as his successor. In that alternate past, Guy travels to the planet Ghera, which Hal never had, and ends a civil war there. But he contracts a yellow plague which kills him and as he dies, he passes the power ring and battery to Hal Jordan. Intrigued, Hal meets and becomes friends with Guy Gardner after the Guardians' presentation is through.
