“Menace from the Sea”

Charlton's "Awesome! Gigantic!" tagline says it all — Gorgo #7 from 1962 sends the great sea monster crashing into Cold War territory with the story "Menace from the Sea." The cover by penciler Joe Sinnott and inker Vince Colletta is a thrillingly chaotic scene: the towering green behemoth looms over a backdrop of explosions and debris while a second monster menaces from below, and a group of uniformed soldiers — one bearing a Soviet star — stares up in sheer terror. Based on the King Brothers MGM picture and brought to life inside by writer Joe Gill and artist Rocco Mastroserio, this issue delivers exactly the giant-monster mayhem Gorgo fans were after.

A group of aliens from a war-like world land on Earth with plans of conquest but are chased away by the monstrous locals. Turns out the aliens landed in New Orleans during Mardi Gras and the locals were people dressed up in costumes.
