About this Issue

Godzilla vs. Avengers #1 represents the first time in Marvel Comics history that Godzilla has faced the New Avengers — the specific early-2000s lineup assembled by Brian Michael Bendis — marking a meaningful gap in the kaiju's published Marvel encounters that previously covered only the original Avengers, the West Coast Avengers, and the Mighty Avengers. As the fifth chapter in the 'Godzilla vs. Marvel' event, which itself constitutes Godzilla's first wholly new Marvel material since Godzilla, King of the Monsters #24 in 1979, the issue carries the added distinction of being part of the first Marvel series to bring additional Toho creations — including Jet Jaguar and Fin Fang Foom — into the same story. Writer David F. Walker's decision to frame the clash through competing, unreliable accounts given to a S.H.I.E.L.D. interrogator — a storytelling structure Walker explicitly connected to Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon and to the real-world creative relationship between Kurosawa and original Godzilla director Ishiro Honda — gives the issue a narrative ambition uncommon in licensed crossover comics. The issue also anchors the entire 'Godzilla vs. Marvel' series' era-hopping framework at its most recent Marvel setting, placing the King of the Monsters inside the Bendis-era New Avengers at their cultural peak.

History

The broader 'Godzilla vs. Marvel' event — of which this issue is the penultimate chapter — grew out of years of negotiations between Marvel VP of licensing Sven Larsen and Toho, the Japanese company that controls the Godzilla license; talks that originally concerned only the reprinting of the original 1977–1979 Doug Moench and Herb Trimpe Marvel Godzilla series before expanding into an agreement for all-new stories timed to coincide with Godzilla's 70th anniversary. The event was formally announced via The Hollywood Reporter on December 12, 2024, with each one-shot assigned to a different creative team and a different era of Marvel continuity. Godzilla vs. Avengers #1 was written by Eisner Award-winning writer David F. Walker — who brought personal enthusiasm for both the Bendis New Avengers run and the Millennium-era Godzilla films to the assignment — with interior art by Georges Jeanty, inking by Karl Story, colors by Frank D'Armata, and a main cover by Leinil Francis Yu, who had drawn the New Avengers during the very period the story revisits. Editor Alanna Smith oversaw the issue under Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski.

Trivia · 9 facts

  • Published June 18, 2025 (cover date August 2025) by Marvel Comics; a 32-page, full-color, self-contained one-shot rated Teen+.
  • Written by David F. Walker; art and inks by Georges Jeanty; colors by Frank D'Armata; main cover by Leinil Francis Yu.
  • Fifth of six one-shots in the 'Godzilla vs. Marvel' event, preceded by Godzilla vs. X-Men #1 and followed by Godzilla vs. Thor #1.
  • Marks the first-ever meeting between Godzilla and the New Avengers lineup — specifically the Bendis-era (2004) team including Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage, and Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew).
  • The story is set in the early 2000s Marvel era and employs a Rashomon-style unreliable-narrator structure: each New Avenger gives S.H.I.E.L.D. Deputy Director Maria Hill a conflicting account of the battle with Godzilla, Fin Fang Foom, and Jet Jaguar near Astoria, Oregon.
  • Features Jet Jaguar — whose in-story origin is tied to Toho's Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) via character Bonnie Ibuki, niece of Goro Ibuki, the robot's original inventor — making this one of the first Marvel comics to weave Jet Jaguar into its continuity.
  • Spider-Man and Wolverine appear as returning combatants within the 'Godzilla vs. Marvel' series itself, having both fought Godzilla in earlier one-shots.
  • The 'Godzilla King of the Monsters Homage Variant' cover by Michael Allred recreates the cover of Marvel's original Godzilla #23 (1979) — the issue in which the classic Avengers first faced Godzilla — with Wolverine inserted in place of the Vision and speaking a comparable line of dialogue.
  • The six one-shots were collected in the trade paperback Godzilla vs. the Marvel Universe, published September 30, 2025, and were followed by the limited series Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe beginning July 2025.
