About this Issue

Generation X #48 is the debut issue of Adrienne Frost — Emma's psychometrically powered older sister and the villain whose scheming would ultimately kill Synch and dissolve the team — making it the narrative seed of the series' own undoing. The same issue marks Maggott's formal transfer from the X-Men to the Massachusetts Academy, a roster move that briefly brought one of Marvel's most unconventional mutants into the Generation X fold. Together, those two plot threads represent incoming writer Jay Faerber's opening hand: deepening Emma Frost's family mythology while simultaneously reshuffling the student roster at a moment when the title was struggling to find its footing after its original creative team departed. The Jubilee-versus-M confrontation framed by the 'scorpion and fox' fable also crystallizes the interpersonal tension that had quietly defined the series since its early issues.

In "Foxes & Scorpions," Emma faces a sudden financial crisis when her stocks collapse, forcing her to seek help from her older sister—a move that stirs up old tensions. Meanwhile, Paige returns from Kentucky to a chilly reception from Chamber, while M and Jubilee escalate their rivalry in the Danger Room. The school's already tense atmosphere thickens with the arrival of Maggott, adding new uncertainty to the X-Men's latest chapter. Written by Jay Faerber and illustrated by Terry Dodson, with inks by Rachel Dodson, colors by Felix Serrano, and lettering by RS and Comicraft, the issue's cover by Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson captures the mood of shifting alliances and quiet confrontations.

History

Generation X #48 was written by Jay Faerber, who was taking over the series as it navigated the post-Larry Hama transitional period during which sales had been dipping. Pencils were supplied by Terry Dodson — inked by Rachel Dodson and colored by Felix Serrano — with lettering by Richard Starkings and Comicraft; Frank Pittarese edited under editor-in-chief Bob Harras. The issue was released on December 16, 1998, with a February 1999 cover date, positioning it as the first chapter of what Faerber intended as a character-driven reinvigoration of the book. Maggott's transfer had been set up editorially in X-Men (2nd series) #79, where Beast arranged for him to move to the Massachusetts Academy, meaning the two books coordinated the handoff across titles.

  • Maggott (Japheth) officially joins the Generation X roster in this issue, arriving at the Massachusetts Academy on the closing pages after Beast arranged his transfer from the X-Men.
  • Story title: 'Foxes & Scorpions' — the title derives from the classic scorpion-and-fox fable that Monet recounts to Jubilee during their Danger Room confrontation.
  • Credited creative team: Jay Faerber (writer), Terry Dodson (pencils), Rachel Dodson (inks), Felix Serrano (colors), Richard Starkings/Comicraft (letters), Frank Pittarese (editor), Bob Harras (editor-in-chief).

  • Adrienne Frost's appearance in this issue is in flashback only; her first full, in-person appearance occurs in the following issue, Generation X #49 ('Trophies').
  • Maggott's stay with Generation X lasts only through issue #49, when he departs after a big-game hunter targeting his slug companions endangers the team.
  • The issue is collected in the Generation X Epic Collection: Family Business (2025, Marvel), which gathers Generation X #48–62, Generation X Annual 1999, X-Man #50, and New Warriors (vol. 2) #5.
