About this Issue

The Gargoyles Winter Special (2024) is the first wordless — entirely dialogue-free — comic story in Dynamite Entertainment's canonical Gargoyles line, demonstrating that the franchise could sustain a purely visual narrative built around Bronx, the Manhattan Clan's non-speaking gargoyle-beast, in a way no previous issue had attempted. Its structural novelty — using only sound effects and expressive artwork in place of dialogue balloons — pushed George Kambadais to carry the full weight of pacing and character emotion, marking a creative departure from the word-heavy storytelling typical of the series. The special also introduces Lance, a bull terrier who would return in the 2025 Winter Special, quietly expanding the supporting cast of the Dynamite era. As only the second holiday one-shot in Dynamite's run — following the 2023 Halloween Special — it helped establish a recurring seasonal anthology format for the license.

History

The special originated as a collaboration between Gargoyles series creator Greg Weisman and Nate Cosby, who typically served as editor and packaging lead for Dynamite's Disney-licensed comics but stepped into the co-writer seat for this project. Cosby brought the idea of centering a winter story on Bronx, and Weisman shaped it into a canonical adventure running parallel to the then-ongoing Gargoyles: Quest miniseries. George Kambadais, the artist who had illustrated the full twelve-issue inaugural Dynamite volume starting in December 2022, returned to draw the special, with JP Jordan providing colors and Jeff Eckleberry handling lettering and sound effects — the latter role taking on heightened importance given the story's wordless format. The special shipped on December 18, 2024.
