“Mistaken Identity Crisis”

The third chapter of Dan Slott's four-part Great Lakes Avengers miniseries puts the team in a genuinely unsettling situation, as Paul Pelletier and Rick Magyar's cover depicts a massive dark creature with glowing red eyes crouching menacingly in a tangle of branches, its shadowy duplicates lurking in the canopy above. Below it, two GLA members look up with expressions ranging from alarm to grim determination. It's a striking piece of tension-building cover art that sets a darker, more threatening tone than you might expect from Marvel's most underestimated super-team.
