“5: Get Ready to Shed a Tear”

The fifth chapter of Garth Ennis and Goran Parlov's hard-edged MAX series takes Nick Fury squarely into Cold War Cuba, and Dave Johnson's cover sets the tension beautifully — a one-eyed operative lines up a rifle scope on a bearded revolutionary figure framed in a golden circle, the whole composition drenched in blood-red tones. Below, a tourist-postcard "Enjoy Beautiful Havana" greeting is splattered with crimson and layered over imagery of military tanks, making the irony land with real punch. Lee Loughridge's color work ties both halves of the cover together into something that feels equal parts pulp thriller and political commentary — exactly the kind of mature storytelling Marvel's MAX imprint did so well in 2012.
