“Carnival of Death”

The cover of this August 1978 DC issue sets an unsettling scene: several Freedom Fighters — including Uncle Sam, the Ray, Black Condor, Phantom Lady, and the Human Bomb — are trapped inside glass containment pods, while a green-faced villain in purple triumphantly commands slime-drenched duplicates to rise and replace them forever. The bold cover tagline, "Will anyone discover the Deadly Duplicates before it's too late?!", makes the stakes bracingly clear, and the lush linework by Alex Saviuk and Frank Giacoia gives the whole composition a wonderfully kinetic, late-Bronze-Age energy. If you're a fan of DC's team books from this era, this one's a genuinely fun snapshot of the Freedom Fighters at their most imperiled.
