In the quiet, storybook village of Folklords, Ansel dreams of a world beyond the tales—where the modern world holds the truth behind the legends. When he and his friend Archer decide to seek the Folklords themselves, they’re thwarted by the Guild of Librarians, who declare the quest a death sentence. With the help of a shadowed Librarian, they vanish into the night, chasing a mystery written in the stars and whispered in the wind.

In the shadowed heart of the forest, Ansel and Archer flee the monstrous Weeping Wood Killer only to stumble upon Greta, a lost girl with secrets of her own. As Ansel is haunted by dreams of the Folklords and a strange, candy-laced house, the forest itself begins to close in—leaving him trapped in the Killer’s grasp.

In the twisted heart of a forgotten fairy tale, Greta coldly explains to Ansel why she and Hanz are about to end his life—just as they’ve ended so many others. When Ugly arrives to dismantle the horror, the gingerbread cottage burns, and with it, the past. Ugly’s grim promise to join Ansel on his journey marks the start of something far darker than any tale told.

In the hidden heart of a forgotten library, Ansel and Ugly follow the enigmatic librarian into a realm where stories breathe and gnomes are trapped within the pages of books. There, amid the echoes of forgotten tales, they find Archer caught in the grim trenches of a World War I narrative—just one of many lives suspended between the lines.

In "null," the Folklord John Roland meets his end at the hands of Demure and Sal, leaving Ansel, Ugly, and Demure to press on with Ansel's quest as freed gnomes journey toward home. Meanwhile, in a parallel world, a narrator dressed in the attire of Ansel’s realm races toward the New York Public Library, caught in a mystery that echoes the unfolding events across the realms.
