Vertigo's horror anthology Flinch arrives at its thirteenth issue with a genuinely unsettling cover by Rick Berry — a battered man in a torn jacket crouches atop a downed, grotesquely masked figure in vivid purple-and-red costume, a baseball bat tucked at his side, the whole scene rendered in an eerily muted, painterly haze. Inside, the collaboration of writer Joe R. Lansdale and artist Tim Truman promises the kind of Southern-gothic menace Lansdale does so well, joined by additional stories from Roger Langridge and the team of Brian Azzarello and Javier Pulido. For fans of mature, boundary-pushing horror comics, this 2000 installment is a compelling package.
