“The Gathering, Part 2 of 5: "Happy Birthday"”

In "The Gathering, Part 2 of 5: 'Happy Birthday'," Carol Stevens takes her son Jacob to a comic book store for his birthday, where a mysterious figure named Sysyphyx hands him a strange box promising superpowers—including flight. When Jacob returns home and opens it, his behavior grows increasingly erratic, culminating in a violent outburst that leaves his father unconscious beneath a strange cocoon. As the night unfolds, the full horror of the box’s gift begins to reveal itself, and a terrifying transformation takes hold. Written by Michael Alan Nelson and illustrated by Marco Rudy, with colors by Marc Rueda and letters by Marshall Dillon, this issue’s chilling tone is perfectly captured in the cover by Vatche Mavlian.

Carol Stevens takes her son Jacob to a comic book store for his birthday. Sysyphyx approaches Jacob there and gives him a box. She says it will give him super powers, including the ability to fly. When Jacob gets home and opens it he begins to act very aggressively. Eventually, his dad is called home when Jacob is found on the roof saying he can fly. When his dad yells at him, Jacob hits him in the head with a bat. His mother finds the father on the floor with a giant cocoon above his bed. Sysyphyx shows up and uses Carol's body to help birth Gnruk, who flies off carrying Sysyphyx.
