About this Issue

Evil Ernie #1 (2014) marks the opening chapter of Dynamite's second volume of Evil Ernie comics — the direct, ongoing follow-up to both the 2012 Jesse Blaze Snider reboot and Tim Seeley's Chaos! event miniseries, making it the first issue to treat the Dynamite-era Chaos universe as a fully functioning shared world rather than a finite relaunch experiment. The series handed the character to the creative team most responsible for re-architecting that universe — Seeley himself had written the Chaos! event that reintroduced Ernie, Chastity, and Purgatori — and in doing so it cemented the Dynamite-Chaos line as a coherent, ongoing publishing program rather than a series of disconnected test runs. It also deepens the ongoing role of Mistress Hel, the Norse-mythology-inflected character created by Dynamite as a deliberate narrative replacement for Lady Death (whose rights Dynamite did not acquire), giving the wider Chaos cast an anchor villain distinct from the original Pulido continuity.

History

Evil Ernie's publishing history is one of the more tangled in modern horror comics: created by Brian Pulido and artist Steven Hughes at Eternity Comics in 1991, the character became the cornerstone of Pulido's own Chaos! Comics imprint until the company's 2002 bankruptcy, after which the non-Lady Death Chaos properties were eventually acquired by Dynamite Entertainment. Dynamite launched its first Evil Ernie reboot in October 2012 with a six-issue series by Jesse Blaze Snider and Jason Craig, then in early 2014 ran the Chaos! event miniseries written by Tim Seeley to reintroduce the full cast — and it was directly off the back of that event that Dynamite launched this second ongoing volume in October 2014, with Seeley co-writing alongside his brother Steve Seeley and interior art by Rafael Lanhellas. Notably, original creator Brian Pulido was not involved in and expressed criticism of the Dynamite relaunches, stating that he was not approached about participating and that Dynamite did not credit him as creator inside the issues.

  • This is Dynamite's second Evil Ernie ongoing volume (Vol. 2), distinct from the 2012 six-issue limited series by Jesse Blaze Snider and Jason Craig — it picks up after the Chaos! event miniseries.
  • Tim Seeley served double-duty as co-writer and main (Cover A) cover artist; additional covers were provided by Carlos Rafael, Ardian Syaf, Kyle Hotz, Ken Haeser, and Andrew Mangum, with Jae Lee supplying a retailer-incentive variant.
  • The issue was edited by Joe Rybandt and carries a T+ (Teen Plus) rating; the book runs 32 pages in full color.
  • Mistress Hel — a Norse goddess-of-death figure created by Dynamite as a narrative stand-in for Lady Death (whose rights remained with a separate rights-holder) — features prominently in the issue and throughout the series as a key antagonist.
  • The series was solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' August 2014 Previews catalog and was simultaneously available digitally via ComiXology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital at launch.
  • The complete six-issue run was collected in trade paperback (Evil Ernie Vol. 2 TPB, 184 pages, also written by the Seeleys with art by Lanhellas and cover by Tim Seeley).
  • Original Chaos! Comics creator Brian Pulido publicly stated that Dynamite did not credit him as the character's creator inside the issues, and he was critical of the Dynamite Chaos revival's fidelity to the source material.
