It follows the original five X-Men—Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, and Angel—as they reunite under the guise of mutant-hunters to secretly protect their kind, leading to confrontations with villains like Apocalypse and the return of the original X-Men's classic foes.
In "What Lurks Below?", the original X-Men reunite when Jean Grey’s return from the brink of death stirs long-buried secrets and the Phoenix’s lingering echo. With Jean recounting her ordeal, the team forges X-Factor—not as hunters, but as protectors, secretly rescuing vulnerable mutants like Navy man Rusty Collins, whose sudden flame powers mark him as both danger and hope. Written by Bob Layton and illustrated by Jackson Guice, with inks by Layton, Guice, and Joe Rubinstein, and a striking cover by Walter Simonson and Joe Rubinstein, this 2005 launch blends emotional reunion with a new mission, all set against the backdrop of a world still wary of mutants.
In "What Lurks Below?", Sub-Mariner teams up with the Avengers to recover a mysterious cocoon from the depths of Jamaica Bay—its contents a shocking mystery tied to the long-dead Jean Grey, whose dormant form now stirs beneath the surface.
In "Like a Phoenx!", Jean Grey awakens from a mysterious capsule, her mind fractured and her past uncertain. As Reed Richards works to restore her memories, she begins to unravel a shocking truth: she was once replaced by the Phoenix, a being that ultimately perished trying to understand what it meant to be human.
In "Third Genesis," the original X-Men reunite when Jean Grey returns from the brink, her survival tied to the enigmatic Phoenix force. As they grapple with her past and the lingering echoes of the mutant legacy, the team forms X-Factor—posing as hunters, but secretly dedicated to protecting and guiding new mutants. When Navy man Rusty Collins awakens with uncontrollable flame powers, he becomes the first true test of their new mission.
In "Regression Obsession," X-Factor tracks down the captured Beast, only to discover the unsettling effects of Maddicks' experiments—his fur has vanished, leaving him altered in ways that unsettle even his teammates. As the team grapples with the implications, Angel dons a new brown and white costume, signaling a shift in the mission’s tone.
In "Trials and Errors," Beast grapples with the challenges of life as a human after years of being a mutant, his confidence tested when a failed training session sends him fleeing from X-Factor. Lost and vulnerable, he stumbles into the grasp of Frenzy, who has her own plans for him—plans that bring her into direct conflict with the team. The story explores identity, trust, and the fragile line between safety and self-determination, all within the intimate, character-driven world of X-Factor.
In "Tapped Out," X-Factor tracks down their fugitive adversary Nowlan, guided by a crucial lead from Nowlan’s wife, only to be ambushed by the forces of Apocalypse. The team’s pursuit takes a brutal turn when they’re overwhelmed, and Nowlan is dragged back into the clutches of his ancient, powerful master.
In "Fallout!", X-Factor finds themselves caught in a firestorm when protests erupt against their mutant-hunting base, forcing them into a tense double game—splitting their team and donning disguises to simultaneously track down the very mutants they’re secretly trying to protect. The line between hunter and helper blurs as personal stakes rise and the mission tests their loyalty in ways they never expected.
In "Grand Design," X-Factor finds themselves in Russia, where a lecture on mutant-hunting techniques quickly turns into a covert mission when they intercept Doppelganger, a rogue mutant conducting sinister experiments on other mutants for the Russian government. The story unfolds with tense precision, blending espionage and mutant intrigue in a mission that tests the team’s resolve.
In "The Gift of Death," Thor returns to Midgard seeking quiet after the chaos of gods and war, only to find his peace shattered by a warning from the Frogs. When he ventures into the Morlock tunnels to investigate, he stumbles upon a grim scene: the Marauders are hunting down a fallen X-Man, Angel.
In "Fires of the Night," Thor races to save the dying Angel from the Marauders, only to be cursed with brittle bones by Hela after his arm is broken by Blockbuster. With Balder’s help, Odin’s second Raven is reborn, and Kevin and Mick find unexpected refuge within Volstagg’s family. As the battle ends, Thor purges the Morlock tunnels with fire, leaving the aftermath in ashes.
In "Redemption!", X-Factor races to rescue a wary group of Morlocks from the Marauders, only to see their trust shattered when the refugees flee into a hostile police confrontation. As tensions rise and old wounds resurface, Boom Boom makes a bold choice to break free from the Vanisher’s shadow, while Cyclops and Jean face a painful medical decision about Angel’s future.
In "Boom Boom Boom!", Jo finds herself trapped by the Vanisher, forcing X-Factor to mount a rescue before her powers spiral out of control. Meanwhile, Jean searches for her sister, and Scott faces a personal crossroads as he prepares to return to Alaska and his wife.
In "Whose Death Is It, Anyway?", the Morlocks return to the tunnels as Scott confronts the aftermath of Maddie's death in Alaska, trying to steady a broken Angel. With Apocalypse assembling his Horsemen and the weight of loss pressing in, Angel’s final flight leaves only silence—and a question hanging in the air.
