☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis volume collects the early adventures of Simon Garth, the tragic hero turned into a mindless undead servant, from Marvel's 1970s horror comics. It features appearances by Dracula, the voodoo priestess Marie Laveau, and the serpent god Damballah, as Garth struggles against dark forces while trapped in his zombie form. The collection reprints material from the original Tales of the Zombie series and related titles, presented in black-and-white to match the Essential format.
"Zombie!" kicks off a chilling tale in Essential Tales of the Zombie #1, a 2006 Marvel release where a desperate criminal named Blackie learns too late that playing with the dead is a dangerous game. With artwork by Tony DiPreta and a cover by Pablo Marcos, the story unfolds in a Haitian village where fear and dark magic collide as Blackie’s attempt to summon a zombie backfires in the most horrifying way.
In a remote Haitian village, Blackie’s past catches up to him when the man he wronged—Larson—returns from the dead, wielding the power to command zombies. Desperate to survive, Blackie attempts to harness the same dark magic, only to summon a corpse that answers to a far more dangerous master. Written by a nameless hand and illustrated with haunting precision, this chilling six-page tale turns vengeance into a nightmare of unintended consequences.
In "The Voodoo Queen of New Orleans!", a desperate henchman of Marie Laveau smuggles Dracula’s coffin from New York to the heart of the French Quarter, setting in motion a dark ritual that calls upon ancient powers. With the vampire’s blood as a key ingredient, the stakes rise as New Orleans becomes a battleground of occult forces.
In "The Law and Phillip Bliss! (Part 1)," a desperate cult's plan to destroy the Zombie collides with an accidental summoning in New Orleans, where Philip Bliss unwittingly calls the creature to himself. As the city's shadows deepen, the line between hunter and hunted blurs in this tense, suspense-driven tale.
In "The Blood-Testament of Brian Collier," a lone Zombie stumbles upon a murder scene in the swamp—Brian Collier, an elderly man, lies dead, and his family is thrown into chaos. With the estate divided among relatives by will, a killer begins eliminating heirs one by one, turning blood ties into deadly traps. When James Collier uncovers the truth behind the murders, he finds himself hunted—only to be saved by the very creature he once feared.
In "A Second Chance To Die," Brad Sloan faces execution for murder—only to be pulled from the gallows by the victim’s widow, Lura Harrow. She takes him to her isolated island, where voodoo grants him endless life, but at a terrible cost: he’s hunted relentlessly, wounded again and again, unable to die. When magic suddenly returns him to the gallows, the moment he’s been forced to relive becomes his final, irrevocable end.
In "A Death Made Out of Ticky-Tacky!", Layla and the Zombie return to the humid streets of New Orleans, where Layla searches for a way to end Simon’s torment. But when another group discovers the Amulet of Damballah, they summon the Zombie to serve their dark purpose—pulling him into a conflict he never asked for.
