About this Collection

This 2003 DC collection reprints the two-issue miniseries that brought the legendary World War I flying ace Hans von Hammer back into action during the Second World War. Written by Garth Ennis with art by Chris Weston, the story follows the reluctant German pilot as he is forced out of retirement to serve the Nazi regime, grappling with his personal code of honor against the horrors of a new, more brutal conflict.

In "Book One" of Enemy Ace: War in Heaven, the legendary German pilot von Hammer leads his small squadron in a final, desperate stand against overwhelming Allied forces. After being shot down near Dachau, he witnesses the horrors of a concentration camp and makes a shocking decision to surrender—only to face resistance from his own men. Written by Garth Ennis and illustrated with gritty precision by Russ Heath, with colors by Matt Hollingsworth and letters by Bill Oakley, this issue captures the weight of war and the cost of conscience. The cover, by Jim Dietz, sets a haunting tone for a story that redefines heroism in the crucible of World War II.
