Featuring stories by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert, it presents the tragic, honor-bound warrior's aerial duels and moral conflicts in the skies above Europe. The book includes Enemy Ace's debut in Our Army at War #151 and subsequent tales from issues #152-153, 155-156, as well as stories from Star-Spangled War Stories and other titles, preserving the gritty, psychological tone of the series.
"Enemy Ace" collects the classic World War I aerial combat tale written by Robert Kanigher and illustrated by Joe Kubert, whose dynamic artwork brings the tension of dogfights and moral dilemmas to life. When the seasoned German pilot von Hammer returns to his airfield, he's confronted by a new rival, the ruthless pilot known as The Bull, whose actions have already cost a fellow aviator their life—setting the stage for a deadly personal duel. The cover, also by Joe Kubert, captures the intensity of the moment with striking precision.
In "Fokker Fury!" from Enemy Ace Archives #1, Hans von Hammer finds himself in a tense aerial duel when he accidentally shoots down a British Bristol fighter—only to discover its pilot was already out of ammo. Now, with his own Fokker facing a determined enemy with empty guns, the stakes are set for a fight defined by skill, nerve, and the thin line between survival and surrender.
In "The Slayers and the Slain!" from Enemy Ace Archives #1, the legendary Enemy Ace finds himself locked in a deadly aerial duel with The Hangman, the feared French ace who flies an all-black Spad. With the skies above the Western Front blazing and survival hanging by a thread, the pilot’s skill and nerve are pushed to their limit in a fight that will echo into the next issue.
In "The Face of the Hangman," the Enemy Ace, wounded and stranded behind enemy lines, is taken in by the mysterious Hangman and his sister, whose motives remain shrouded in shadow. Just before being shipped off to a POW camp, von Hammer makes a daring escape and vanishes back into the war-torn skies—where the line between hunter and hunted blurs once more.
In "The Bull," von Hammer returns to his airfield to find a new pilot, dubbed The Bull, has already made a name for himself—by letting a fellow pilot die to pursue an unarmed enemy plane. The Bull then issues a personal challenge to von Hammer, setting the stage for a duel that tests more than just skill in the sky.
