In the main story, Egbert and his friend Rollo build a car from junk, but Rollo's tinkering with the engine goes awry and causes problems during their drive. Later, Egbert pursues a career in radio, attempting to secure a record called "Rock of Ages" for a radio program, but he becomes caught up in increasingly chaotic situations involving a program director and various mishaps. Eventually, Egbert finds himself helping an ailing Mr. Bindle who is suffering from malnutrition, and confusion ensues when Egbert attempts to fetch special water to help revive him, leading to further complications and the elderly man's exasperation.
