“I Walked with a Spider”

Marvel's Edge of Spider-Verse takes a wonderfully eerie detour with issue #4, "I Walked with a Spider" — a 2014 one-shot styled like a vintage pulp thriller or old-school horror movie poster. Garry Brown's cover leans fully into that aesthetic, presenting circular portrait medallions of "Uncle Ted," "The Girl Next Door," and "Spiders!" alongside a young, bespectacled figure in a suit caught in an enormous web, a shadowy spider-like silhouette looming behind him. It's a clever, atmospheric package from writer Clay McLeod Chapman, artist and inker Elia Bonetti, and colorist Veronica Gandini that promises a Spider-Verse story with a distinctly different, unsettling tone.
