“Of the Blood”

This 2011 issue of Doom Patrol presents one of the more striking covers of the run — a sepia-toned portrait gone terribly wrong, with three figures rendered in period dress absolutely drenched in vivid red bloodsplatter. The bandage-wrapped Negative Man stands to the left clutching what appears to be a card, a elegantly dressed woman sits at center, and an armored, helmeted figure looms to the right beneath an ominously dangling noose — all rendered with unsettling composure by Matthew Clark. Titling the story "Of the Blood," writer Keith Giffen and artists Clark and Ron Randall look to be leaning into something darkly theatrical that fans of the team's weirder edges will find hard to resist.
