Doctor Strange #43

A green-skinned sorceress sits imperiously on a throne of carved stone as Doctor Strange — red Cloak of Levitation billowing, Eye of Agamotto gleaming — stands his ground in the foreground, flanked by allies and surrounded by grasping, monstrous hands closing in from every side. The cover blurb says it all: "Doctor Strange met his match the day he met Shadowqueen!" Michael Golden's cover art for this October 1980 issue crackles with atmospheric menace, setting up what promises to be one of Strange's most daunting mystical confrontations. With Chris Claremont writing and Gene Colan on interior art, issue #43 is a fine showcase for the dark, otherworldly tone this series does so well.
