Doctor Fate stands cloaked in his distinctive golden cape at the center of a ring of menacing street toughs — armed with axes, chains, knives, and bats, some sporting gang insignia — in a cover composition by Vincent Giarrano that crackles with tension. The solitary, masked figure feels genuinely outnumbered, making "The Forgotten" a compelling read for anyone who appreciates the mystical hero in grounded, street-level peril. William Messner-Loebs and Giarrano were clearly pushing the series in a gritty, urban direction in 1991, and this issue looks like a strong example of that ambition.
