“The Golden West”

In "The Golden West," the ever-resourceful Heckle and Jeckle attempt to strike it rich with their latest invention: a Magic Telegraph Box that promises to "telegraph PEOPLE instead of MESSAGES." Penciled and inked by Jim Tyer, this 1955 St. John classic follows the duo’s chaotic scheme as their get-rich-quick plan spirals into comedic disaster—complete with a trip to China and a mountain of chop suey. The cover, by Tom Morrison, captures the zany energy of the tale, all in a 10-cent comic that’s as clever as it is silly.

Destitute and looking for a fast buck, Heckle and Jeckle construct a Magic Telegraph Box that "will telegraph PEOPLE instead of MESSAGES" and test it out by "telegraphing" Heckle to China, where he returns with chop suey as proof of his journey. They mass-produce the boxes and make a fortune off of the multitudes who wish to travel rapidly and cheaply. The inevitable flaws in the Magpies' plans soon reveal themselves, leaving them as broke as they began the story.
