In the first story, Dilly and his girlfriend Carol go to the beach where Dilly gets overheated and must cool off in the water; when a boy named Ellsworth arrives with a canoe, Dilly attempts to impress the girls but falls in the water and loses a contest to Ellsworth, resulting in the tide coming in and stranding him. In the second story, Dilly and his friend encounter a woman at the Duncan residence who is promoting a movie contest; Dilly enters the amateur film contest and wins first prize, leading to his film being shown on television where his unintentional comedic antics—including physical gags and slapstick—are mistaken for professional acting talent by viewers watching "The Moth-Eaten Musketeers."
Dilly Duncan is determined to win Carol's heart at the school's charity picnic, but his rival Ellsworth Edgerton—a wealthier suitor—threatens to outbid him for her lunch basket. After scraping together what money he can, Dilly finds himself competing against Ellsworth in a series of picnic games, culminating in a canoe race where a split-second choice will force him to decide what really matters.
Betty Campus gets the phone call of her dreams—a famous movie star is inviting her to appear on his television show—but her classmate Bob Lewis has cooked up a prank that's about to turn her starstruck evening upside down. What starts as a chance to meet her idol at the Crestwood Hotel becomes a comedy of misunderstandings when Betty finds out the truth behind the invitation, and things only get messier from there.
Dilly Duncan and her friends recruit Tinker Tomlin to help them make a movie for an amateur film contest, and they hit on the idea of secretly filming her father in candid moments around the house—his frantic morning routine, his awkward attempts to show off old football plays—without his knowledge. When the film wins first prize and gets selected for a television broadcast, Dilly faces an evening of reckoning as her unsuspecting father finally sees himself on screen. It's a race against the clock to figure out what happens when a dignified businessman discovers he's unwittingly become a star.
