Dial H #14
Brian Bolland's cover for this 2013 New 52 entry is a wonderfully strange tableau: a massive elephant dominates the background while a green-skinned, red-haired woman armed with a camera holds her ground at the center, surrounded by a crowd of similarly green-hued, oddly transformed bystanders scrambling in every direction amid a shower of flying bones and debris. It's the kind of gloriously weird image that perfectly suits China Miéville's run, where superhero transformation takes genuinely surreal, unsettling turns. Alberto Ponticelli and Dan Green handle interior art duties on "Threadbare Ontology," promising the same inventive strangeness the series has made its signature.
