Detective Comics #523 (February 1983) holds a firm place in Batman history as the first appearance of Killer Croc — one of the very few wholly original villains to join Batman's rogues gallery during the Bronze Age and stick. The character is introduced in deliberate shadow, his name only whispered as 'Croc,' a slow-burn reveal that made his eventual full emergence feel earned. Writer Gerry Conway conceived Croc as a philosophical counterweight to Batman's intellect — raw brutality as antagonist — and the issue's cross-title serialization structure (its Batman story flowing directly into Batman #357) represents a consciously modern approach to storytelling continuity that DC was pioneering at the time. History

The issue was produced during Gerry Conway's tenure as the unified writer of both Detective Comics and Batman — an editorial model championed by editor Len Wein, who merged the continuities of the Batman titles so that stories flowed from one book to the other with unresolved cliffhangers. The Batman lead story, 'Inferno,' was pencilled by Gene Colan and inked by Tony DeZuniga; the cover was by Ed Hannigan with inks by Dick Giordano. Conway has stated in interviews that he designed Killer Croc as a deliberate physical threat to Batman — someone who would drag the hero into sewers and overpower him on brute strength alone — and that the character's longevity genuinely surprised him, as he had no long-term plan mapped out for Croc beyond the immediate arc.
