“The Coming of... Clayface III!”

In "The Coming of... Clayface III!", a desperate man's quest to cure his disfiguring condition spirals into something far more monstrous. Preston Payne, experimenting with the remains of the second Clayface, Matt Hagen, unleashes a terrifying transformation that turns his body into a living, shape-shifting force of destruction. When Batman steps in to stop Payne's dangerous heist, he finds himself in the crosshairs of a new kind of villain—one whose very flesh is a weapon. Written by Len Wein and brought to life with striking art by Marshall Rogers, this 1978 issue features a cover by Rogers and Terry Austin that captures the chilling essence of a new Clayface rising.

Preston Payne uses blood from Matt Hagen, the second Clayface, to try to change the effects of hyperpituitarism on his appearance. But the "cure" causes Payne's flesh to melt like wax and forces him to periodically dissolve others into protoplasm. When Batman interferes with Payne's theft of the components necessary to reverse his condition, he may become Clayface's next victim.
