About this Issue

Detective Comics #395 marks the precise moment that writer Dennis O'Neil and artist Neal Adams first collaborated on Batman in the Detective Comics title, launching a partnership that would fundamentally redefine the character for decades to come. Their lead story, 'The Secret of the Waiting Graves,' deliberately dismantled the campy residue of the 1966–68 ABC television series and pushed Batman back toward the gothic, pulp-detective roots he had in the early Golden Age. The immortality-and-madness premise of the Muertos villains is widely recognized by critics and historians as a thematic dry run for O'Neil and Adams's later creation of Ra's al Ghul, whose own rejuvenating power similarly carries a terrible psychological cost. DC itself acknowledged the issue's watershed status by labeling the 2000 Millennium Edition reprint 'Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams' First Tale of the Dark Knight.'

In "The Secret of the Waiting Graves," Batman is drawn into a mysterious fiesta hosted by the enigmatic Mexican socialites Juan and Dolores Muerto, where a deadly plot unfolds under the guise of celebration. With Neal Adams' striking art and Denny O'Neil's sharp storytelling, the story unfolds in a world where ancient secrets and modern danger collide, as Batman uncovers a chilling truth behind the Muertos' lavish gathering. The cover by Neal Adams captures the eerie elegance of the tale, a haunting vision of a masked figure beneath a moonlit arch.

History

The issue carries a January 1970 cover date but was actually distributed on November 26, 1969, edited by Julius Schwartz. Schwartz had already been steering Batman away from camp in the wake of the television series' cancellation in early 1968, bringing in Frank Robbins and other strong artists, but he had initially rejected an earlier O'Neil Batman script as too dark for the character's then-current tone; once O'Neil's approach proved a hit with readers, that previously shelved story was finally published. For 'The Secret of the Waiting Graves,' Adams penciled and Dick Giordano inked both the cover and the 16-page lead story, while the Robin backup — 'Drop Out… or Drop Dead!' — was scripted by Frank Robbins and drawn by Gil Kane with Murphy Anderson on inks. A note in the Grand Comics Database records that credits for the issue were confirmed from Schwartz's own editorial records provided by DC Comics.
