About this Issue

Deadpool/Wolverine #9 represents the dramatic payoff of the series' central '90s-homage arc, bringing both Wade Wilson and Logan fully into Apocalypse's fold as his Horsemen — a status-quo inversion that gives two of Marvel's most resilient characters a genuinely threatening new role rather than a comedic one. The issue is the penultimate chapter of writer Benjamin Percy's deliberately structured ten-issue run, meaning it carries the full weight of the season's escalating plot: mind control, a Legacy Virus successor, and Apocalypse occupying Stryfe's body in a twist that recontextualizes decades of X-Men lore. As part of the 'X-Men: From the Ashes' initiative — itself Marvel's post-Krakoa reset — the series and this issue in particular serve as a bridge between the Krakoa era's end and the incoming Age of Revelation crossover, with Wolverine's Horseman transformation already being discussed as a possible visual and narrative thread carried forward. While not a debut issue, #9 crystallizes the thematic argument Percy built from issue one: that the duo's shared regenerative mythology makes them uniquely suited to be weaponized by death itself.

History

The Deadpool/Wolverine ongoing was conceived in the direct wake of the 2024 MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, with Marvel tapping Benjamin Percy — already the architect of multiple Wolverine and X-Force runs — to write a comics counterpart that could capture the screen pairing's energy while telling a story only the page could support. Percy reunited with artist Joshua Cassara, his collaborator on X-Force and X Lives/X Deaths of Wolverine, and editor Mark Basso shepherded the project as part of the broader 'From the Ashes' X-line relaunch. Percy stated in interviews that the series was explicitly designed as a 'cousin' to the classic '90s crossover 'X-Cutioner's Song,' intentionally reviving Stryfe, the Legacy Virus concept, and Apocalypse's long-frustrated plan to inhabit Stryfe's body. Issue #9 itself shifts interior art duties to Robert Gill, with Cassara remaining on covers, as the series approached its finale.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released September 17, 2025, written by Benjamin Percy with interior art by Robert Gill and cover art by Joshua Cassara; lettered by VC's Joe Sabino and colored by Guru-eFX.
  • Issue #9 is titled 'Lost Legacy' and is the penultimate chapter of the ten-issue Deadpool/Wolverine Vol. 1 run, which concluded with issue #10 on October 1, 2025.
  • The central story development: both Wolverine and Deadpool are revealed and shown operating as Horsemen of Apocalypse, controlled via 'Legacy 2.0' — a nanite-based successor to the original Legacy Virus — secreted by a captive new mutant character called Legacy.
  • The villain driving events is Apocalypse, who has transferred his consciousness into the body of Stryfe (Cable's evil clone), gaining Stryfe's psionic powers in the process — a callback to Apocalypse's long-unfulfilled ambition from the original 'X-Cutioner's Song' crossover.
  • Wolverine, overdosed on Legacy 2.0, is depicted as a transformed, hulking giant creature, while Deadpool is simultaneously placed under the counter-control of O*N*E director Talyn, creating a three-way factional conflict.
  • The series is part of Marvel's 'X-Men: From the Ashes' initiative — the publishing line that replaced the Krakoa era — and was designed by Percy as a stealth sequel to the early-'90s X-Men crossover 'X-Cutioner's Song.'
  • Issue #9 shipped with multiple variant covers, including a 1:25 Michele Bandini variant, a Retro Halloween Mask variant by James Kerigan, and NYCC 2025 exclusive variants by Mico Suayan (Battle Damaged and Battle Damaged Virgin editions) through Big Time Collectibles/Comic Inspiration.
  • The full ten-issue series was collected in a TPB edition and made available on Marvel Unlimited upon completion of the run.
