About this Issue

Deadpool/Wolverine #8 ('Conquest') is the narrative fulcrum of Benjamin Percy's ten-issue 2025 series — the issue where the new mutant character Legacy graduates from uncertain ally to something far more threatening, directly setting up the arc's explosive endgame. It marks the first full team-up between Wolverine, Deadpool, and Legacy as a trio, while simultaneously delivering the long-promised reveal of Director Talyn's scheme. Within the larger Marvel publishing context, the series represents the comics line's direct response to the massive cultural footprint of the 2024 Deadpool & Wolverine film, capitalizing on renewed mainstream interest in the pairing while pushing the duo into classically X-Men territory — Apocalypse, the Legacy Virus legacy, Horsemen mythology — that the movie never touched. The issue also advances a revisionist reading of the Legacy Virus concept, recasting Stryfe's old biological weapon as a techno-organic mind-control intelligence, a storytelling evolution with long-term implications for Marvel's mutant lore.

History

The Deadpool/Wolverine ongoing series launched in January 2025, written by Benjamin Percy — who had already helmed an extended Wolverine solo run — and drawn by Joshua Cassara, whose prior X-Force and X-Men work made him a natural fit for the gritty, kinetic tone Percy envisioned. Editor Mark Basso shepherded the series, which Marvel positioned as the flagship comic companion to the post-film surge of interest in the two characters. Issue #8 falls squarely within the series' second half, where Percy pivots from establishing the Legacy 2.0 threat to executing the Apocalypse-as-puppet-master payoff that had been seeded since the opening issues.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Issue #8 is story-titled 'Conquest' and was released August 27, 2025 (cover-dated October 2025).
  • Written by Benjamin Percy; art, inks, and cover by Joshua Cassara; colors by Guru-eFX; letters by VC Joe Sabino; edited by Mark Basso.
  • The issue features the first full team-up of Wolverine, Deadpool, and the new mutant character Legacy — whose moral alignment (good or evil) is the central dramatic question of the issue.
  • Director Talyn's master gambit is revealed in this issue, a plot thread that had been building since at least issue #2, where Talyn first appeared as a ONE (Office of National Emergency) commander.
  • Legacy 2.0 is portrayed not merely as a virus but as an evolving techno-organic entity, recontextualizing the classic Legacy Virus mythology introduced by Stryfe in the early 1990s X-Men line.
  • The issue is the penultimate chapter before the Horsemen of Apocalypse revelation pays off: by issue #9, Wolverine and Deadpool are revealed to be serving as Horsemen of Apocalypse — a status seeded throughout the back half of the run.
  • Three cover variants were offered: the main Joshua Cassara cover, a Declan Shalvey variant, and a Sajad Shah variant.
  • The series as a whole runs ten issues and is set in Marvel's Earth-616, with Stryfe (possessed by Apocalypse) as the primary villain and Legacy 2.0 eventually manifesting in a massive Wolverine-inspired physical form in issue #9.
