About this Issue

Deadpool/Wolverine #7 marks the first appearance of the all-new mutant character called Legacy — a debut that arrives at the precise narrative pivot point where the series' Stryfe/Apocalypse threat peaks, giving the character an immediate story weight that new introductions rarely enjoy. The issue also delivers a consequential plot development as Stryfe reclaims his signature helmet, whose restored power actively redirects the heroes' plans and sets up the arc's final stretch. Within the broader 'X-Men: From the Ashes' publishing initiative — Marvel's post-Krakoa line rebuild — the series functions as the franchise's primary action-spectacle flagship, drawing a direct creative lineage from the classic 1993 'X-Cutioner's Song' crossover by revisiting Stryfe, the Legacy Virus, and their tangled relationship with Apocalypse. As the issue where a brand-new mutant antagonist enters the Marvel Universe, it serves as a durable character-history record that will matter whenever Legacy resurfaces in future X-Men continuity.

History

The Deadpool/Wolverine ongoing series launched in January 2025 as part of Marvel's 'X-Men: From the Ashes' initiative, riding the cultural momentum of the blockbuster 2024 film. Writer Benjamin Percy — already deep into a multi-year Wolverine tenure that included X-Force and the Hellverine concept — was the editorial selection to reunite the pair in print, with artist Joshua Cassara, his frequent collaborator on X-Force and X Lives/X Deaths of Wolverine, handling primary art duties. Percy has stated in interviews that the arc was conceived as a deliberate callback to '90s X-Men storytelling, specifically the 'X-Cutioner's Song' crossover, building on its Stryfe/Legacy Virus foundation while layering in a new, thematically resonant version of Apocalypse possessing Stryfe's body. By issue #7, interior art duties had shifted to Robert Gill — a fill-in arrangement consistent with the book's production pattern from issue #6 onward — while Joshua Cassara retained the cover throughout the run.

  • The series belongs to Marvel's 'X-Men: From the Ashes' initiative, the line-wide editorial framework replacing the Krakoa era after the mutant nation's fall.
  • Percy has described the arc as a deliberate spiritual sequel to the 1993 'X-Cutioner's Song' crossover, with the Legacy Virus (here reimagined as 'Legacy 2.0,' a mind-control variant created by Stryfe/Apocalypse), Stryfe, and Apocalypse all central to both stories.
  • Two variant covers were offered alongside the main Cassara cover: a Corin Howell variant and a Walt Simonson variant.
  • The complete 10-issue series (#1–10) was collected in the trade paperback Deadpool/Wolverine: A Time of Stryfe (Penguin Random House / Marvel, 2026), which includes issue #7's Legacy debut.
