Deadpool #3
Deadpool (1994) #3 — titled 'Deadpool Sandwich' — is a structurally pivotal chapter in the 'Sins of the Past' limited series, the second of Deadpool's two pre-ongoing miniseries and the proving ground where his voice and supporting relationships were solidified under Mark Waid. The issue deepens the budding dynamic between Deadpool and Siryn that Waid planted in issue #1 — a flirtatious, will-they-won't-they undercurrent that writers would return to for years afterward. It also continues to flesh out Dr. Killebrew, the Weapon X scientist whose unethical experiments on Wade Wilson are the biological root of Deadpool's existence, building toward the emotional confrontation in issue #4 where Siryn talks Deadpool out of killing the man who made him. Taken together, the four-issue arc permanently installed Siryn, Banshee, and Killebrew into the Deadpool mythos that Joe Kelly's 1997 ongoing would inherit.
In "Deadpool Sandwich," the merc with a mouth finds himself caught in a tangled web of betrayal and chaos as he clashes with Juggernaut and Interpol agent Daniel Peyer—only to have Peyer’s true motives exposed by Banshee, who’s reeling from the revelation that his old friend has been playing both sides. Meanwhile, Killebrew’s bizarre experiment takes a shocking turn when he grafts Deadpool’s severed hand onto Black Tom, setting off a chain of unpredictable consequences. Written by Mark Waid and brought to life by Ian Churchill’s dynamic art and Bud LaRosa’s sharp inks, this 1994 issue blends relentless action with dark humor, all under a cover by Churchill and LaRosa.

After the relative commercial success of Fabian Nicieza and Joe Madureira's 1993 debut miniseries 'The Circle Chase,' Marvel ordered a follow-up, but editorial rejected Nicieza's proposed story — in which Deadpool's cancer returned and he hunted the scientists who created him — as too bleak. The assignment went instead to Mark Waid, who scripted all four issues of 'Sins of the Past'; it was notably Waid's first work for Marvel. Ian Churchill provided the primary pencils across the series, with Ken Lashley sharing art duties beginning in issue #3, inked by Bud LaRosa. The series editor was Suzanne Gaffney, with Bob Harras serving as group editor under editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Issue #3 carries the in-story title 'Deadpool Sandwich' and was cover-dated October 1994 (on-sale August 9, 1994), the third of four issues in the 'Sins of the Past' limited series.
- Writer Mark Waid scripted all four issues of 'Sins of the Past'; the series represented his first work for Marvel Comics.
- Pencils on issue #3 were shared between Ian Churchill (primary series artist) and Ken Lashley, inked by Bud LaRosa, with lettering by Richard Starkings/Comicraft.
- The issue's plot centers on Deadpool and Siryn fighting on two fronts simultaneously — against Juggernaut (Cain Marko) and against Interpol agent Daniel Peyer — while Banshee (Sean Cassidy) discovers Peyer has been deceiving him.
- Dr. Killebrew, the Weapon X scientist responsible for Wade Wilson's physical transformation into Deadpool, continues his role in the story: he attaches Deadpool's previously severed hand onto Black Tom Cassidy in a desperate attempt to use the regenerative tissue to cure Tom's degenerative 'wood infection.'
- The Deadpool–Siryn (Theresa Cassidy) flirtatious relationship established across the series — and continued through this issue — became a recurring thread in Deadpool lore that later writers referenced, representing one of the earliest sustained attempts to give Deadpool an emotional through-line.
- The entire 'Sins of the Past' four-issue run (issues #1–4) was collected in a 1997 trade paperback of the same name, then later folded into 'Deadpool Classic, Vol. 1' (collecting New Mutants #98, The Circle Chase #1–4, and Sins of the Past #1–4) and the 'Deadpool & X-Force Omnibus.'
- NOTE on Doctor Killebrew: His first appearance is in Deadpool (1994) #1 ('If Looks Could Kill!'), confirmed by GCD, Wikipedia, Key Collector, and Marvel Fandom — not in issue #3, where he plays an ongoing role. Any catalog entry attributing a 'first appearance' of Killebrew to issue #3 would be erroneous.
