DC Comics Presents #60

The cover of this August 1983 issue says it all: Superman finds himself in the unusual position of being friend to the Guardians of the Universe yet foe to the Green Lanterns, and Gil Kane's artwork captures that tension perfectly — the Man of Steel locked in a mid-air clash with a female Green Lantern while multiple other Lanterns swarm below and the towering, ghostly faces of the Guardians loom over the whole scene. It's a genuinely compelling visual puzzle, with the cover blurb asking outright what could possibly pit Superman against an entire corps of ring-wielders. With Cary Burkett writing and Irv Novick on interior art, "Battle for the Universe" promises an epic cosmic confrontation worthy of both DC's greatest hero and its most powerful peacekeeping force.
