Crime Suspenstories #5

Jan 1983 · Russ Cochran · [none]
“This'll Kill You!”

In "This'll Kill You!", two crooks in disguise storm the office of President Simon Goober, only to be outsmarted at every turn—starting with a safe full of stage money and escalating to a check made out to cash, written in invisible ink, and a set of five cigars that double as explosives. Written by Al Feldstein and illustrated with sharp precision by Marie Severin, this classic Crime Suspenstories tale delivers a perfectly timed twist in a story that’s as clever as it is darkly funny. The cover, by George Evans, captures the tension with a tense, stylized showdown.

Ed has finally tracked down Marty, the man who stole his woman and his money. Ed plans to shoot Marty in his diner, but Marty has a plan. He stalls for time, knowing a policeman will be along soon for his usual late-night snack. When the cop arrives outside, Ed realizes he's been tricked and Marty taunts him mercilessly. Then, just before the officer can enter the diner, a speeding car roars by and the cop reluctantly has to chase after it. Poor Marty.
