In "Across the Plains," Melody Ames and his companion Sally attempt to guide a wagon train across treacherous terrain and a dangerous river crossing, but the wagons are swept away by the current, forcing Melody to rescue Sally from the disaster. Later, Melody confronts the mob leader Tom Rider, who has been terrorizing the settlement and kidnapping Sue, and defeats him in a confrontation. In a second story, Bill Hodder pursues the outlaw Hodder to recover stolen money, eventually catching him and winning back his sweetheart Jenny with her father's blessing.

When Bill Thomson rolls into Pinebush looking for honest railroad work, he finds himself caught between a ruthless saboteur and a determined young woman fighting to save her father's railroad before a ten-day deadline runs out.
