“Spider Isle”

Even the mighty Conan can find himself at the wrong end of a chain, and this November 1982 issue puts that on full display — the Cimmerian is shackled to a wooden yoke, straining against his bonds while a menacing bald brute in green looms over him and a bearded figure lurks in the shadows behind. John Buscema both penciled and inked this visceral cover, capturing the raw tension of a hero at his most vulnerable with the kind of muscular dynamism he brought to the series issue after issue. With Bruce Jones scripting a tale called "Spider Isle," there's clearly something sinister waiting beyond those chains.
