“Wings of the Prayer”

In "Wings of the Prayer," Conan finds himself reluctantly drawn into the plight of Valdover, a town whose fate now rests on his blade. After killing the mercenaries meant to slay the dragon Styrm, he's coerced into taking their place by a sorceress wielding both fear and promise. With Paolo Parente's striking art and a vivid, brooding palette by Roberto Calabro, this 1988 Marvel issue captures Conan’s grim resolve as he steps into a role he never sought.

Conan is brought in as an unwilling savior of the town of Valdover. Apparently, he had killed the mercenaries who were scheduled to save the town from the ravages of the dragon Styrm. As a result, the sorceress in charge of the town used a combination of threats and bribes to secure his word to save the town instead.
