The Energon Universe was conceived in 2021 when Hasbro approached Skybound Entertainment — Robert Kirkman's imprint within Image Comics — about acquiring the Transformers and G.I. Joe comics licenses that IDW Publishing was set to relinquish at the end of 2022; Skybound officially announced the deal in June 2023. Cobra Commander #1, scripted by Joshua Williamson (coming off his run on DC's Superman) and illustrated by Andrea Milana (Impact Winter: Rook) with colors by Annalisa Leoni (Oblivion Song), was positioned as the second of four planned G.I. Joe miniseries within that universe, following the Duke debut series that launched in December 2023. According to a behind-the-scenes note preserved on the Transformers Wiki, it was actually Williamson's early development work on Cobra Commander — and his suggestion that Energon could appear in the Florida swamps — that helped crystallize the name 'Energon Universe' for the entire line. Demand for the debut issue was strong enough that Skybound and Image rushed a second printing to stores on February 21, 2024, just five weeks after the original release date.
