The third chapter of DC/Vertigo's ten-part biographical series Chiaroscuro: The Private Lives of Leonardo da Vinci arrives with a photorealistic cover — rendered by Stephen John Phillips and Richard Bruning — that captures the series' dreamlike, meditative tone perfectly. A bearded, bare-chested figure gazes upward, great feathered wings spread at his back, while a hawk looms in the foreground and a ghostly infant face drifts through the hazy background. Subtitled "Clearly in Dreams," this September 1995 installment promises the same blend of Renaissance wonder and intimate introspection that makes this Pat McGreal and David Rawson series one of Vertigo's more quietly compelling offerings.
