Chaos! #1

History

Dynamite Entertainment first acquired the Evil Ernie character and tested the waters for a broader Chaos revival with a 2012–2013 Evil Ernie miniseries, then purchased the remaining Chaos! Comics library (excluding Lady Death, whose rights had passed to Brian Pulido and Avatar Press following Chaos!'s 2002 bankruptcy) in the lead-up to 2014. The publisher formally announced the Chaos! miniseries at New York Comic-Con 2013, framing it as a cornerstone of Dynamite's own tenth-anniversary celebrations coinciding with Chaos!'s twentieth. Horror writer Tim Seeley — already known to the Chaos fanbase through a prior Hack/Slash crossover with Evil Ernie — was tapped to script the six-issue event alongside Italian artist Mirka Andolfo, with Walter Baiamonte on colors and Marshall Dillon on letters. Because Lady Death's rights were unavailable, Seeley and Andolfo created Mistress Hel as a new death-goddess character to anchor the mythology, a narrative necessity that became one of the defining creative decisions of the entire Dynamite Chaos line.
