The story follows a new generation of Challengers as they investigate a series of bizarre deaths linked to the original members, blending mystery, conspiracy, and Chaykin's signature cynical edge. The volume collects the entire four-issue miniseries.
In "The Challengers Must Die!", the Challengers of the Unknown face a surreal twist when Multi-Man—revealed to be a robot believing himself the true hero—demands a retraction after reading his own obituary. Written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated with stark, expressive detail by Tim Sale, this 2004 issue explores identity, legacy, and the cost of being remembered, all with a cover by Tim Sale that captures the story’s eerie tone.
In "The Challengers Must Die!", the once-celebrated team is scattered and forgotten—Rocky’s lost himself to drink, Ace drifts through spiritual questions, and Red rails against their faded legacy. When Prof Haley and June Robbins detect a mysterious red mist in space, their experiment triggers a catastrophic explosion at Challenger Mountain, leveling Challengerville. Forced back into action, Ace, Rocky, and Red race to save lives, only to be arrested by authorities who see them as the cause of the disaster.
In "Tell the Truth!", the Challengers of the Unknown face a death sentence after a mysterious explosion rocks a city, with their lawyer attempting to pin the blame on the late Prof. As the prosecutor mocks their legendary adventures and the defense highlights their heroic past, Superman’s unexpected testimony shifts the tide—declaring them true heroes. Though acquitted, the team is ordered to pay damages and disband, leading Ace to hold a press conference announcing their breakup. In a dimly lit hotel, a mad bomber smirks, while a shadowed woman in Venice begins her journey toward the United States.
In "Lives of Our Days!", the remnants of the Challengers of the Unknown drift apart after their last gathering at the graves of Prof Haley and June Robbins. Ace Morgan, now a solitary magician in a Greenwich Village loft, finds his quiet pursuit of the arcane interrupted by a sudden visit from Doctor Fate. Rocky stays in Challengerville, drawn into the film industry by a producer’s offer, while Red Ryan becomes a lone vigilante in Gotham City, taking down criminals with ruthless precision. Amidst these lives, sleaze reporter Harold Moffet begins to notice a troubling pattern: violent acts with no clear motive are spreading across the country.
In "The Restless and the Young!", each of the Challengers faces a turning point: Rocky gambles away his fortune with the enigmatic Corinna Stark, Red finds himself exiled from Gotham and fighting for survival in El Segundo, Ace plunges into the Amazon in search of a mythical tribe, and Harold Moffet is haunted by cryptic visions of violence and a voice urging him to keep going—each wrestling with age, purpose, and the cost of being a hero.
In "As the World Spins!", the Challengers of the Unknown face their own unraveling as each grapples with the weight of existence—Red escapes a prison torment, Ace returns to find his jungle sanctuary destroyed, Rocky confronts a haunting echo of his past, and reporter Harold Moffett, handed a cryptic task by Prof, sets out to reunite them all. As their lives spiral in different directions, a mysterious summons pulls them back toward a shared fate they never asked for.
In "The Beautiful and the Bold," reporter Harold Moffet digs into a wave of suicides and violent outbursts, zeroing in on a photo that leads him to Duncan Pramble, the disgraced former Multi-Man—only to learn Pramble claims he destroyed Challenger Mountain. As crowds surge toward the ruins, Ace stumbles through the Amazon, glimpsing Red’s reflection in a still pool, then leaps through a mysterious door to pull Red from flames and a suicide attempt. Moments later, Rocky—recovering from alcoholism and doubt—wakes to find Red and Ace suddenly appearing before him, unexplained and unharmed.
In "Another World!", Ace, Red, and Rocky reunite at the graves of Prof and June, where Harold Moffett reveals Duncan Pramble destroyed Challenger Mountain. Armed with old gear, they fly back to the ruins, only to be overtaken by demons when Ace is possessed—forcing a desperate bailout as the aircar crashes. Stranded among the wreckage, they flee a cult-like group of locals before being pulled through a rift into a surreal farm world, where Prof and June greet them at a door that rings like a bell, all beneath the looming shadow of the demon N'Zrath.
In "I Know You Are, But What Am I?", a robot believing himself to be the heroic Multi-Man is stunned to learn he’s been declared dead in a newspaper obituary—only to discover his identity is far more complicated than he thought. After a trip to the DMV sparks chaos with Guy Gardner, the truth unfolds: he’s Multi-Man II, a creation of the original’s lost powers, and now, with a new companion in tow, he sets off on a road with a surprising twist.
