Challengers of the Unknown #18
In "Saxon's Story," the enigmatic Noel Saxon—long a shadowy adversary to the Challengers of the Unknown—takes center stage in a haunting, character-driven tale written by Steven Grant and illustrated by Mike Zeck, with inks by Denis Rodier and colors by Kurt Goldzung. When Saxon is pulled back from a Tesla field by a group of reckless teens, he’s drawn into the sinister Aristos cult, where the Eye of the Dark Flame reveals a shocking connection to the very crash that defined the Challengers’ origin—only Saxon refused the transformative light. Cover by Mike Zeck and Denis Rodier, this 1998 issue delivers a tense, personal reckoning that redefines Saxon’s role in the mythos, all without revealing how it ends.

Noel Saxon has dogged the Challengers since their inception. He's an Anti-Challenger, resisting all efforts to probe the unknown. After Saxon was sucked into a Tesla field, some punks conjured him back to this world. When he is invited to a meeting of the Aristos cult, the Eye of the Dark Flame reveals he was also aboard the jet that crashed, but he turned away from the life-altering light. The flame chooses Saxon as its champion but he rejects demon worship and shoots the place up. But his sister Becky is a cultist who tried to sell his soul to save their dying father. Saxon strangles her.
