DC's Captain Atom #10 (December 1987) pulls off one of the cheekiest cover gags of the year: the title hero is crossed out by a bold red prohibition symbol, accompanied by the deadpan declaration that Captain Atom "…is NOT in this comic book!" The blue-toned figure beneath that big red slash is muscular and unmistakably heroic, making the joke land with a wink. Bates, Weisman, Broderick, and Smith clearly had fun leaning into the Millennium crossover era with this self-aware, attention-grabbing cover by Pat Broderick.
