The story explores his redefined role in a changing world, featuring encounters with allies like Sam Wilson (Falcon) and Nick Fury, as well as adversaries such as John Walker (Super-Patriot) and Frank Castle. The collection also includes flashbacks to Rogers' past, written by Stan Lee, and ties into the broader Marvel Universe with appearances by Ben Grimm and Hank McCoy.
In "Case No. 1. Meet Captain America," the U.S. Army races to counter the growing threat of the Axis Powers by unlocking the secret of a revolutionary super-soldier serum—only to find that its final test comes down to one man: Steve Rogers. When the project is destroyed and the serum’s creator is lost, Steve becomes the last hope, transformed into Captain America through science and sacrifice.
In an alternate history where the Invaders never disbanded after World War Two, the team grapples with the fallout of Captain America and Bucky’s deaths at Baron Zemo’s hands—leaving Union Jack and Spitfire to carry on in England while the U.S. reshapes the legacy with a new Captain America, the Spirit of '76, and a reimagined Bucky (Fred Davis). As the All-Winners Squad forms and faces threats from Isbisa to the android Adam II’s scheme to assassinate JFK, the mantle of heroism evolves in ways no one could have predicted.
In "null," Steve Rogers dons the Nomad identity as he faces a renewed threat from the Serpent Squad, now led by a new Viper who has taken the name and costume of the original. With the president of Roxxon kidnapped and Krang revealed as the Viper’s secret ally, Nomad races to respond—while the Falcon tracks down Roscoe, a young man seeking Steve Rogers to become the next Captain America.
In "null," Nomad clashes with the Serpent Squad and Krang—both manipulated by the Serpent Crown—as they attempt to use a Roxxon oil platform to awaken the lost city of Lemuria. Amid the chaos, Roscoe steps into the mantle of Captain America, taking up the shield and the responsibility it demands.
In "The Replacement," John Walker opens up to Val Cooper about his past as a Vietnam veteran who sought redemption through heroism, gaining his powers through the Power Broker alongside Lemar. When a chance to join the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation offers a path to pay his debt, he’s instead steered by Ethan Thurm into a calculated rise as a national hero, backed by Thurm’s wealthy allies. Now, with the Commission choosing the costumed adventurer Super-Patriot to carry on the Captain America mantle, John must face the choice of abandoning Thurm—and deciding which of the two Buckies will remain by his side.
In "The Death of Captain America Act 2 The Burden of Dreams: Part Four," Winter Soldier—now wearing the Captain America suit—teams up with Black Widow to thwart a joint A.I.M. and R.A.I.D. operation. Meanwhile, Tony Stark races to convince the Secretary of State that Kronas Corporation is under the control of the Red Skull, while the Skull’s puppet, Dr. Faustus, activates a network of sleeper agents within S.H.I.E.L.D.
