History

Ed Brubaker had been plotting the broad shape of Steve Rogers's return since roughly 2006, conceiving Steve's assassination in Captain America #25 (2007) as part of a larger arc always intended to resolve with a resurrection, though the Bucky-as-Captain-America interlude ran far longer than originally envisioned. The series was announced in April 2009 and was originally planned as a tight five-issue miniseries; expanded storytelling demands led Marvel to extend it to six issues, a decision that some critics felt elongated the pacing. Bryan Hitch — whose cinematic, widescreen style had defined The Ultimates — was recruited as penciler, with regular Captain America inker Butch Guice finishing his pages to deliberately bridge the visual 'house style' of the main series; Paul Mounts handled colors and Tom Brevoort edited. The first issue went on sale July 1, 2009, carrying a September 2009 cover date, and was supported by an unusually rich array of cover editions at launch.
