“Everybody Hurts Sometime”

Dave Hoover's cover for this 1995 issue says it all with striking economy: Captain America lies face-down on rocky ground, maskless and clearly spent, clutching a green serpent in his bare hands while the ominous banner "FINISHED!" looms overhead. The tagline "Fighting Chance No More!" signals that the stakes for Steve Rogers have reached a grim new low. It's a tense, visceral image that makes Captain America #436 genuinely hard to put back on the shelf.
